A/B testing
A/B testing is the practice of showing two different versions of something to randomly split groups of users and measuring which version performs better. It is the closest thing digital marketing has to the scientific method. You form a hypothesis, design a controlled experiment, collect data, and make a decision based on statistical significance rather than gut feeling. Whether you are testing a headline, a button color, a pricing page layout, or an entire user flow, the mechanics are the same.
The challenge is not running the test — dozens of tools make that trivially easy. The challenge is running it correctly. Most A/B tests I have audited over the years suffer from the same problems: insufficient sample size, testing too many variables at once, peeking at results too early, or optimizing for a vanity metric that does not connect to revenue. A properly run test requires patience, statistical rigor, and a clear understanding of what “winning” actually means for your business.
From a growth engineering standpoint, A/B testing is how you turn opinions into evidence. Every team has debates about what will work better — testing settles those debates with data. The compounding effect of consistently making evidence-based improvements, even small ones, is enormous over time. But you need enough traffic to reach significance, and you need the discipline to kill your darlings when the data says your brilliant idea actually made things worse.
